Details of the San Basilio de Palenque private tour
The village was founded by slaves who fled the city of Cartagena de
Indias in the sixteenth century and released by Benkos Bioho. The word
"palenque" refers to fences erected by black slaves who escaped from
the Spanish during the colonial era. San Basilio de Palenque was
declared Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.
Your tour begins at the central park of the village where a local guide
teaches you some basic words in their language "Palenquero" as well as
to know the exciting and courageous history of the people of this
village. You will know the Benkos Bioho monument and take a typical
meal of the community on a terrace of a traditional house.
After a brief visit of the village, you will appreciate the talent of
Batata music students who will do some songs and dances under the
rhythms of Mapalé and Bullerengue ($), and who have a great influence
on the musical identity of Colombians in the region. You will
appreciate the musicians and the dancers who will invite you to dance
with them under the central gazebo of the vilage.
Dinner is not included, but we strongly suggest you take this option
because the meal is excellent with a huge fish on a banana leaf,
coconut rice, plantains, salad and a typical drink called "agua" panela
".
